Jane Fonda & Donald Sutherland FTA
The year 1971 included one dramatic national protest after another, from the Winter Soldier Investigation of alleged U.S. war crimes in Indochina to the Mayday demonstrations in Washington DC.
In Fayetteville, GI and Quaker House activists got ready to join these national actions, but also were hard at work laying plans for local actions as well.
The Mayday demonstrations evoked some of the most militant and disruptive nonviolent actions yet seen in the antiwar movement. Thousands of protesters blocked streets in Washington DC during rush hour. Over ten thousand were arrested. A similarly large action was held simultaneously in Boston, where authorities declined to make arrests.
In Fayetteville that spring, actor Donald Sutherland joined Jane Fonda and other stars in a wildly successful, nationally-noted anti-war show at the Haymarket Square GI Coffehouse, and Armed Forces Day was again marked by large public peace actions. The movement, it seemed, was on a roll.
